Why the groundworks matter more than the paving
Almost every landscaping problem we are called to fix is a base or drainage problem wearing a paving problem's clothes: rocking slabs, a patio that puddles, a wall leaning after a wet winter.
It is also the half of the quote you cannot see once the job is done, which is exactly why it is the half that gets cut to win work. We price it properly and show you the build-up.
Why it suits gardens round here
Sloping plots, heavy clay in places and a genuinely wet climate. All three point the same way: get the levels and the drainage right and a garden lasts, skip them and it moves. Coastal gardens along the Northumberland and Sunderland coast have salt and wind on top, which narrows the sensible planting and fixings considerably.
Looking after your garden
Keep the drainage runs and gullies clear, brush the paving, and top up jointing where it wears. Check the weep holes in any retaining wall each autumn — a blocked weep hole is what puts pressure on a wall over winter.

Common garden questions
Usually, and it is the single change that makes the most difference. It means terracing with retaining walls rather than just moving soil about — a retaining wall holding back any real height is a structural element and needs foundations and drainage behind it, which is where most DIY attempts fail.
Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, does not stain and stays clean with less work, but it is unforgiving of a badly laid base. Natural stone weathers into a North East garden better and suits older properties. Both need a full mortar bed, not five dabs.
A patio at ground level generally not. A boundary wall or fence over one metre next to a road, or over two metres elsewhere, does. Conservation areas change the answer again — we will check yours before quoting.
