Meet John Havelock

I went into the trade in 1986 and I am still on the tools. That is the whole business, really — there is no head office and no salesman between you and the person doing the work.

I came into building through college in 1986, then served 8 years in the British Army from 1990 to 1998 before coming back to the trade. Since then I have spent years on contracts for most of the major UK main contractors, which is where the sequencing and the paperwork side comes from — and it is why a commercial client and a homeowner get run on the same system here.

What I will not do is quote a job I have not properly looked at. If a barn needs underpinning before it needs a kitchen, or a drive needs a new base rather than a skim over the old one, that goes in the written quote at the start — not as a variation three months in when the money is already spent. It is the reason our quotes are sometimes dearer than the one next to them, and the reason there are rarely surprises later.
