Solid sandstone walls with no cavity and no damp course need lime mortar rather than cement, and the difference is not cosmetic: cement traps moisture in soft stone and blows the face off it over a decade. Plots out here are generous, so extensions tend to go sideways as much as backwards, and there are still redundant stone agricultural buildings on many of them that are candidates for conversion. Morpeth town centre is a conservation area, and much of the surrounding land carries its own constraints worth checking before drawings are commissioned.

Cement pointing on soft sandstone traps moisture and forces it out through the face of the stone, which is what causes the spalling you see on so many buildings round here. Lime lets the wall breathe. It is more work and we would not do it any other way.
